What is Agro Tourism

Understanding how farming is done, how farms are cultivated, how the seeds are sown and which crops are taken during which particular period all of this constitutes agro tourism. People living in cities are only partially aware about all the agricultural and allied activities which are undertaken in villages. But observing all of this beforehand, toiling in the fields, and thus truly experiencing the village atmosphere is called agro tourism.

Experiencing the calm and serenity of village life, inhaling the fresh air in the nature endowed scenic places, experiencing art-culture, culinary habits, and clothing all of this also constitutes agro tourism. Here the city dwellers observe the trees, shrubs, different animals, birds, waterfalls etc.  The objective is that people from the urban areas will go and live in the farmers house over a weekend or for couple of days, while the villagers will welcome them in their house by charging some money, this is what the concept of agri tourism is.

The people who have been fed up by urban lifestyle get solace by means of taking a walk in the farms and they try to understand the village culture thus agro tourism has become new face of ‘tourism’. Development of agri tourism can lead to development of rural areas while the development of rural areas will lead to the development of Maharashtra. By following this principle many new agro tourism centers have opened in Maharashtra. But most of the people in the state have no idea about them. Agro tourism helps in supplementing income earned from agriculture. Thus it is very good initiative for farmers.

Agro tourism involves going on the farms, living there, understanding the crop patterns and also doing menial agricultural work by yourself. It helps in understanding the village culture in better way. Many city dwellers have their roots in villages. Many of them have migrated to cities in search of better opportunities. They travel to their villages during traditional festivals and during weddings. But it happens that they can’t relax the way they would love to. There is hardly any time for them to relax when they visit their villages. Most of the children’s of this people have hardly any affinity left towards their villages. This children’s may have seen their ancestral village but they have not experienced it. They may have observed their farms but they haven’t have enjoyed it even by just hanging out there. If this is the case with the people who have native villages to go back to, so one can only imagine the wry life of the people who don’t have any such place to go to. They must have only heard or only read about village life.Thus for people who want to experience the village life, agro tourism provides an interesting option to be explored.

Listening to the chirping of the birds, observing different flowers, testing the fruits, riding the bullock cart, milking cows and Buffalos in a traditional way, swimming in the wells, going for treks, hanging out in farms, experiencing the village festivities and traditional culture, observing the art and craft of village artisans, all of this can be experienced by agro tourism. The logistical issues like residences, food and everything else is taken care of by the agro tourism centers.
